A major geopolitical crisis is unfolding after Donald Trump announced that Ali Khamenei has been killed in a joint United States–Israel military operation.
Trump made the claim on his Truth Social platform, describing Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history” and declaring him dead following coordinated strikes.
Iran Confirms Death After Initial Denial
Early reports from Iranian state media dismissed the claim, insisting Khamenei remained in control. However, authorities later confirmed his death in an emotional broadcast, announcing a 40-day national mourning period.
Satellite imagery showed extensive damage to the Supreme Leader’s compound in Tehran, with burnt structures, debris, and smoke visible across the site.
Mass Casualties and Regional Escalation
The strikes triggered widespread destruction across Iran, with reports indicating hundreds of casualties. Iran’s Red Crescent said over 200 people were killed and more than 700 injured.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred in Minab, where a girls’ school was hit, leaving over 100 people dead, according to local prosecutors.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes across parts of the Middle East, targeting areas hosting US forces and allied interests.
US and Israel Defend Operation
Trump described the attack as a decisive move, stating it offered “a chance for the Iranian people to take back their country.” He also warned that military operations would continue if necessary.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz called the operation a “pre-emptive strike” aimed at neutralising threats against Israel.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, about 200 fighter jets carried out coordinated attacks on roughly 500 targets across Iran.
Global Reactions and UN Emergency Talks
The strikes have drawn global condemnation. Iran’s foreign minister described the attack as “illegal and unprovoked,” accusing both countries of igniting a dangerous conflict.
World leaders across Europe, Asia, and South America have urged restraint. The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and prevent further escalation.

Diplomatic Talks Collapse
The strikes come just days after ongoing nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran showed signs of progress. Mediators had described discussions as “within reach” before tensions escalated.
Trump later said dissatisfaction with the pace of talks influenced his decision to approve the military action.
What This Means Going Forward
Khamenei’s reported death marks a turning point in Middle East politics. Analysts warn the situation could trigger prolonged instability, wider regional conflict, and disruptions to global energy markets.
As tensions rise, the world watches closely for Iran’s next move, and whether diplomacy can still prevent a broader war.
