Armed groups have launched massive coordinated attacks across Mali today. According to reports, these strikes hit the capital Bamako and several other cities. Specifically, violence erupted early Saturday morning around 5:20 am. Furthermore, analysts call this surge of Mali attacks the biggest militant strike since 2012.
Explosions rock major military bases
During the assault, residents heard heavy gunfire and explosions everywhere. For instance, the main military base in Kati was heavily targeted. In fact, reports say Defense Minister Sadio Camara’s house was completely destroyed. Additionally, attackers hit other key cities like Gao, Kidal, and Mopti as part of Mali attacks witnessed nationwide.
The groups behind the Mali attacks
Currently, security experts believe two main groups are working together. First, the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM is likely involved. Second, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) also claimed responsibility for some areas. Basically, the FLA is a rebel alliance pushing for its own state. Therefore, this joint operation has created unprecedented chaos across the country brought on by Mali attacks.
Government response to the crisis
Meanwhile, the Malian army has asked all citizens to remain calm. Presently, military officials say they are fighting back to eliminate the attackers. However, it remains unclear if the entire situation is fully under control. In light of recent Mali attacks, this violence forces many innocent people to flee their homes for safety.
