Senegal goalkeeper ends eight-year international career after helping the Teranga Lions win AFCON and qualify for two World Cups
Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34.
The Al-Ahli goalkeeper announced his decision in a video shared on his official Instagram account, bringing an eight-year career with the Teranga Lions to an end.
Mendy joined the Senegal national team in 2018 under former coach Aliou Cissé.
His international career coincided with one of the most successful periods in Senegalese football history.
AFCON Triumph Defines Mendy’s Career
Mendy was part of the Senegal team that reached the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final before finally winning the tournament two years later.
Senegal defeated Egypt in the 2021 final in Cameroon to secure its first AFCON title.
Mendy played an important role in the historic campaign as Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper.
He was also part of the team that reached another AFCON final in 2025.
That final against Morocco later became controversial after Senegal players left the pitch before normal time had ended.
