Senegal goalkeeper ends eight-year international career after helping the Teranga Lions win AFCON and qualify for two World Cups

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34.

The Al-Ahli goalkeeper announced his decision in a video shared on his official Instagram account, bringing an eight-year career with the Teranga Lions to an end.

Mendy joined the Senegal national team in 2018 under former coach Aliou Cissé.

His international career coincided with one of the most successful periods in Senegalese football history.

AFCON Triumph Defines Mendy’s Career

Mendy was part of the Senegal team that reached the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final before finally winning the tournament two years later.

Senegal defeated Egypt in the 2021 final in Cameroon to secure its first AFCON title.

Mendy played an important role in the historic campaign as Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper.

He was also part of the team that reached another AFCON final in 2025.

That final against Morocco later became controversial after Senegal players left the pitch before normal time had ended.

According to the supplied report, CAF subsequently stripped Senegal of the title.

Mendy Leaves With 59 International Caps

Mendy made 59 appearances for Senegal during his international career.

He conceded 34 goals and recorded 31 clean sheets across those appearances, according to the figures in the supplied report.

The goalkeeper also represented Senegal at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.

His participation in the 2026 tournament followed Senegal’s qualification for the competition.

Mendy therefore leaves the national team after featuring in two World Cup campaigns.

From Chelsea to Al-Ahli

Mendy’s international success came alongside a prominent club career in Europe.

His performances earned him a move to Chelsea, where he helped the English club win the UEFA Champions League in 2021.

He later moved to Saudi Arabia and continued his club career with Al-Ahli.

However, his biggest international achievement remains Senegal’s historic AFCON triumph in 2021.

After eight years with the national team, Mendy now leaves with 59 caps, 31 clean sheets, an AFCON title, two AFCON final appearances and two World Cup campaigns.

His retirement marks the end of an era for one of Senegal’s most successful generations.
