The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has raised concerns over the security situation in the state following a fresh attack by suspected bandits.
The party described the attack as evidence of security lapses and questioned the effectiveness of the surveillance aircraft acquired by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
The APC made its position known in a statement issued on Monday by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare.
According to the party, suspected bandits invaded an Operation Burst base along the Igbeti-Igboho Road in the early hours of Sunday.
The attackers reportedly stole several items, including a generator and a motorcycle.
APC Questions Surveillance Aircraft
The party said the incident raised questions about the deployment of two surveillance aircraft reportedly acquired by the state government.
The APC argued that the aircraft should have been useful in monitoring the area and tracking the attackers.
It said the attack occurred around Igbeti, where the base station for the aircraft was reportedly located.
The party questioned why the surveillance equipment did not prevent or help track the attack.
“Since the day Gov Makinde celebrated the purported delivery of the two aircraft, nothing has either been heard or felt about their deployment to survey the airspace in the state,” the party said.
The APC claimed that the attack lasted for more than an hour without surveillance support being deployed against the attackers.
APC Accuses Makinde of Poor Security Management
The opposition party also criticised Makinde over his repeated criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Sadare described the governor’s position on the reforms as evidence of what he called poor understanding of economic management.
The APC said the latest security incident should prompt the state government to explain how its surveillance assets are being deployed.
It further questioned the effectiveness of the security arrangements around vulnerable areas of the state.
Attack Raises Fresh Security Concerns
The incident has renewed concerns over security along parts of the Igbeti-Igboho axis.
Operation Burst was established as a security response mechanism involving security agencies in Oyo State.
The latest attack on one of its bases has now triggered a political dispute over the state’s security preparedness.
The APC described the surveillance aircraft controversy as a serious matter requiring clarification from the state government.
