The Nyesom Wike-aligned faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved new caretaker committees to oversee party affairs in Kano, Plateau, Yobe and Zamfara states.
Party leaders said the decision forms part of a broader restructuring plan ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), confirmed the development in a statement.
Party Cites Constitutional Powers
According to Mohammed, the National Caretaker Working Committee relied on provisions of the PDP Constitution to make the appointments.
“The NCWC, pursuant to Article 29(2)(b) of the PDP Constitution, has approved caretaker committee members for Kano, Plateau, Yobe and Zamfara,” he stated.
He added that the committees will manage party activities in the affected states until new executives emerge.
Strategic Focus on Northern States
The restructuring targets four key northern states that party strategists consider vital to the PDP’s rebuilding efforts.
Under the new arrangement, the caretaker committees will:
Oversee day-to-day party operations
Strengthen internal structures
Prepare the ground for fresh congresses
Mohammed explained that the committees will operate in line with Section 21(2) of the party’s constitution.
Tenure Limited to 30 Days
Party officials described the appointments as temporary.
“The tenure of these committees shall last 30 days or until the election of new executive committees,” the statement said.
The PDP said the changes take immediate effect. Newly appointed chairmen and secretaries are expected to assume duties across the four states as the reorganisation begins.
What This Means for the PDP
The move signals early positioning within the party ahead of 2027. It also highlights ongoing internal realignments as factions compete to shape the PDP’s future direction.
Political observers say the outcome of this restructuring may influence the party’s strength in the North during the next general elections.
