Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has reflected on the remarkable professional discipline of the late Olu Jacobs, describing his time on set with the legendary thespian as a defining standard for African cinema.
Speaking in an interview following the passing of the 84-year-old cinema icon, Kanayo shared personal memories of Jacobs’ work ethic, mentorship style, and natural authority during film productions.
Unmatched Punctuality and Line Mastery Set On-Set Standards
Kanayo highlighted Jacobs’ strict approach to production schedules, revealing that the late elder statesman consistently arrived long before official call times.
“If call time was 9:00 AM, Uncle Olu was already on set by 8:30 AM,” Kanayo recalled during the broadcast.
He further described Jacobs as belonging to a rare class of performers who brought absolute precision to their roles, rarely stumbling over dialogue or losing focus during intense shooting schedules.
Quiet Mentorship Over Public Embarrassment
Reflecting on how Jacobs interacted with younger actors, Kanayo noted that working alongside the veteran demanded immediate professionalism.
He explained that whenever a junior cast member struggled with a scene, Jacobs avoided public criticism, opting instead to offer calm, constructive advice.
“He wouldn’t embarrass you on set,” Kanayo said, adding that Jacobs expected every actor to take responsibility for refining their craft.
