Manchester City suffered another setback in the Premier League title race after losing 1-0 to Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Yasin Ayari scored the decisive goal as Brighton recorded their first-ever Premier League away victory over City. The result handed Pep Guardiola’s side a second consecutive league defeat following their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.
City remain on 21 points after nine matches, level with Arsenal, who have played one game fewer. Brighton climbed to 19 points and third position following their victory.
The results also produced important developments elsewhere, with Chelsea, Brentford, Bournemouth and Coventry recording victories.
Ayari Punishes City’s Defensive Error
Brighton started brightly at the Etihad and took the lead in the 11th minute through Ayari.
A low cross into City’s penalty area exposed a defensive lapse from Matheus Nunes. The ball reached Ayari, who finished from close range beyond goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The early goal gave Brighton the advantage and allowed the visitors to frustrate City with disciplined defending.
Despite dominating possession, Guardiola’s players struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
Erling Haaland failed to make a significant impact, while efforts from Iliman Ndiaye, Jeremy Doku and Abdukodir Khusanov were also denied.
Brighton threatened to extend their advantage after the restart, but Maxim De Cuyper failed to convert a promising opportunity.
City increased the pressure towards the end of the match but could not find an equaliser.
Nico O’Reilly came particularly close in the 90th minute, but his header went narrowly wide.
Brighton eventually secured all three points after successfully protecting their lead.
The victory came after the Seagulls had faced City in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week, where they lost on penalties following a draw.
Second Consecutive Defeat Raises Pressure On City
The defeat marked City’s second consecutive Premier League loss after opening their campaign with seven straight victories.
Their unbeaten run ended against Aston Villa last weekend, and the Brighton result means they have now dropped six points in successive league matches.
City remain level with Arsenal on 21 points, but the Gunners have a game in hand.
Arsenal could move above Guardiola’s side when they face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Brighton’s victory also strengthened their position among the leading teams, taking them to 19 points.
City must now address their attacking struggles and defensive lapses as they attempt to maintain their title challenge.
Chelsea Deepen Manchester United’s Struggles
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 in a result that intensified scrutiny surrounding Carrick.
The teams went into half-time without a goal despite United creating several opportunities.
Matheus Cunha thought he had opened the scoring for the visitors, but officials ruled out his effort for offside. Chelsea also saw an Estêvão goal disallowed.
Chelsea eventually broke the deadlock in the 50th minute through Morgan Rogers.
Rogers produced an impressive individual effort, driving through the United defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United’s situation worsened when defender Lisandro Martínez received a red card following a VAR review of his challenge on Wesley Fofana.
Chelsea subsequently won a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.
The dismissal left United with 10 players and reduced their chances of recovering.
Chelsea managed the remaining minutes to secure the victory and all three points.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
Their seven points from nine league matches reportedly represent their worst Premier League start since 1986.
United also remained close to the relegation zone after Nottingham Forest suffered defeat on Saturday.
Brentford, Bournemouth And Coventry Claim Victories
Elsewhere, Brentford defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 to collect three important points.
The result left Forest in the relegation zone and extended their difficult run under manager Oliver Glasner.
Bournemouth also defeated Leeds United 2-0 to move into seventh position.
The victory strengthened Bournemouth’s position in the upper half of the table, while Leeds missed an opportunity to collect points away from home.
Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi also made headlines after scoring his first Premier League goal of the season in Coventry City’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland.
Awoniyi, who had returned from suspension following a red card, won possession from a defender before advancing into the penalty area.
His effort took a deflection before finding the back of the net.
The victory lifted Coventry out of the relegation zone, while Sunderland remained at the bottom of the table.
Meanwhile, Hull City and Ipswich Town played out a 2-2 draw in an encounter between two newly promoted sides.
Saturday’s Premier League Results
The completed fixtures produced the following results:
- Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United
- Manchester City 0-1 Brighton
- Brentford 2-0 Nottingham Forest
- Bournemouth 2-0 Leeds United
- Coventry City 3-1 Sunderland
- Hull City 2-2 Ipswich Town
The weekend programme continues on Sunday when Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield.
The encounter could have significant implications for the title race, particularly after City’s consecutive defeats.
