Renewed violence in Rafi LGA comes despite reconciliation efforts by the state government, local authorities and emirate council.
At least six people have reportedly been killed in fresh violence involving Fulani and Kamuku communities in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
The latest attack reportedly occurred around Tashan-Rimi, near Godoro, amid renewed tensions between the two communities.
The casualty figure was given by the Village Head of Tashan-Rimi, Alhaji Garba Mohammed Bissalla, who said residents came under attack despite recent efforts by the Niger State Government and local authorities to restore peace.
Bissalla said six people were killed during the latest attack, while some others, including Musa Bahago and his son, Hamisu Musa, were injured.
His account could not be independently verified in full. However, separate reports have also cited the village head as confirming that six people were killed in the incident.
Fresh Violence After Peace Efforts
The renewed violence comes after previous clashes between the Fulani and Kamuku communities in parts of Rafi Local Government Area.
The Niger State Government had earlier introduced measures aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further attacks.
A reconciliation committee was also established following previous violence, with state and local authorities and the emirate council involved in efforts to broker peace between the communities.
Bissalla, however, said the measures had failed to prevent further attacks.
He alleged that members of the Kamuku community had complied with directives from Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to maintain peace, while accusing members of the opposing community of continuing attacks and livestock theft.
Those allegations could not be independently verified, and no response from representatives of the Fulani community was included in the reports reviewed.
Police Confirm Separate Death Toll
There is also a discrepancy between the community’s reported casualty figure and an account from the Niger State Police Command concerning an attack in the same wider area.
Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun said suspected armed men invaded Godoro and Angwan-Bisala communities under Katako District at about 1:30 a.m. on September 23.
According to the police account, four people were killed while two others sustained serious injuries.
Police operatives reportedly visited the affected communities, evacuated the injured victims to hospital and commenced an investigation.
The difference between the police figure of four deaths and the six deaths reported by the Tashan-Rimi village head means the final casualty figure remains unclear.
Rafi Has Recorded Earlier Communal Violence
The latest incident follows a series of deadly clashes involving the Fulani and Kamuku communities in Rafi LGA this year.
In July, at least 48 people were reported killed in violence around Tegina and surrounding communities. Residents told Premium Times that the violence involved attacks and reprisals between the two groups.
The Niger State Government subsequently imposed a curfew on some affected communities in Rafi LGA following renewed clashes.
Governor Bago directed security agencies to deploy personnel and equipment to affected areas as part of efforts to restore peace and prevent further violence.
The earlier violence was linked in reports to disputes involving land and grazing routes.
The continued attacks have raised concerns about the effectiveness of existing reconciliation measures and the ability of security agencies to protect communities in affected areas.
Community Seeks Stronger Government Action
Bissalla called for concrete measures to address the underlying causes of the conflict and prevent further killings.
He also criticised what he described as insufficient action following previous attacks, saying the reconciliation process had not adequately addressed the circumstances surrounding the violence.
The village head further alleged that residents had lacked basic social amenities for years, adding to the difficulties faced by communities affected by the conflict.
The claims about the absence of social amenities and the effectiveness of the reconciliation committee are those of the community leader and have not been independently verified.

The Niger State Police Command said investigation into the September 23 attack was ongoing.
