At least 64 people have been killed and dozens of others injured after two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province, according to reports from Spanish media and local authorities.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, along the high-speed railway line connecting Madrid, Spain’s capital, with Seville in the south.

Spain’s railway infrastructure manager, ADIF, confirmed the collision and suspended services on the affected route as emergency teams responded to the disaster.

The accident involved a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo service. Initial reports indicated that the Renfe train struck the other train near Urda in Toledo province.

Authorities have continued rescue operations and investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine the full extent of the casualties.

Madrid–Andalusia Rail Services Suspended

The collision disrupted a major railway corridor linking central Spain with the southern region of Andalusia.

ADIF announced the suspension of services on the affected high-speed line, leaving trains halted at stations along the route.

Renfe activated its emergency response procedures and a support plan for victims and their families.

The company said its personnel were working with emergency services, ADIF and other authorities to assist those affected and assess the consequences of the crash.

The disruption has affected passengers travelling between Madrid and southern Spain as authorities work to restore services safely.

Previous Rail Accidents Renew Safety Concerns

The latest disaster has renewed concerns about railway safety in Spain, which experienced another deadly high-speed train accident earlier in 2026.

In January, a collision near Adamuz in Córdoba province killed more than 40 people and prompted widespread scrutiny of the country’s railway network.

A separate commuter train derailment near Barcelona was also reported later that month.

The latest collision has intensified attention on railway safety, emergency response procedures and the circumstances that led to the two trains colliding.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s crash, including the sequence of events leading to the collision.

The death toll and number of injured passengers may change as rescue workers complete their operations and officials confirm casualty figures.

The suspension of services on the Madrid–Andalusia line remains a major disruption for passengers, while railway authorities coordinate emergency assistance and investigate the accident.
