The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently in its custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission’s Head of Media and Public Communications, J. Okor Odey, said El-Rufai remained with the agency as of the close of work on February 18, 2026.
“The Commission wishes to state that Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, is in our custody as at the close of work today,” the statement read.
“He is in the custody of the Commission in connection with ongoing investigations.”
The ICPC did not disclose specific details of the case but said it would provide updates in line with due process and its statutory mandate.

Earlier Engagement With EFCC
Before the ICPC confirmation, El-Rufai reportedly presented himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier in the week, where officials questioned him over related matters.
Authorities have not clarified whether both agencies are handling separate investigations or coordinating on the same case.
Political Background
El-Rufai governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During his tenure, he introduced reforms in public service, education and urban renewal. However, critics challenged aspects of his administration, particularly on security and fiscal management.
Before becoming governor, he served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory between 2003 and 2007. He has remained an active voice in national political discussions since leaving office.
ICPC Reaffirms Due Process
The ICPC stressed that it operates within the law and follows established procedures in all investigations.
“The Commission remains guided by the rule of law and assures the public that investigations are being conducted professionally and without prejudice,” it added.
As of press time, El-Rufai and his associates have not issued an official response.
Possible Political Impact
Political observers say the investigation could carry wider implications, given El-Rufai’s influence in national politics and his role within the ruling party structure.
The ICPC, established in 2000, continues to intensify scrutiny of public officials as part of broader anti-corruption efforts.
