Rangers Face MC Alger In Continental Test
Rangers International will turn their attention to the CAF Champions League when they welcome MC Alger of Algeria on Sunday.
The first-leg encounter forms part of the competition’s second preliminary round, with both teams seeking an advantage before the return fixture in Algeria.
The Enugu side will aim to secure a positive result at home and keep their qualification hopes on track. With progression determined over two legs, Rangers will need to balance their attacking approach with defensive discipline.
MC Alger, meanwhile, will be seeking a result that leaves them well positioned ahead of the return match.
Rangers’ continental commitment has also affected their domestic schedule, resulting in the postponement of their Match Day 9 fixture against Bendel Insurance.
Qualification would move the Nigerian side closer to the Champions League group stage and strengthen the country’s representation in Africa’s premier club competition.
African Giants Begin Their Group-Stage Push
The CAF Champions League second preliminary round runs from October 16 to 18 for the first legs, with return matches scheduled for October 23 to 25.
The round features 32 clubs competing for 16 places in the group stage, which is scheduled to begin in late November.
Friday’s programme includes Pyramids FC of Egypt against South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu, Rwanda’s APR FC against Egyptian giants Zamalek, and Sierra Leone’s Star Sport Academy against Morocco’s RS Berkane.
Saturday’s fixtures include CFFA of Madagascar against Tanzania’s Young Africans, Namibia’s African Stars against South African side Orlando Pirates, and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo against Tunisia’s Club Africain.
Other Saturday matches feature Côte d’Ivoire’s San Pedro against Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou and Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto against Tanzania’s Simba SC.
The matches offer established continental sides and emerging challengers an opportunity to build first-leg advantages before the decisive return fixtures.
Sundowns Begin Title Defence Against Wiliete
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their title defence against Angola’s Wiliete Sport Clube, with the first leg scheduled to take place in Angola on Sunday.
Wiliete booked the meeting after progressing from the opening preliminary round, setting up a major test against the reigning champions.
Sundowns will aim to establish an advantage before hosting the return fixture in South Africa later in October.
Sunday’s other matches include Zimbabwe’s Scottland FC against Angola’s Petro Atlético, Ethiopia’s Sidama Bunna against Sudanese side Al-Hilal Omdurman, and Guinea’s Horoya AC against Al-Merriekh of Sudan.
Libya’s Al-Swehly will face four-time African champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis, while Senegal’s Teungueth FC meet Cameroon’s Colombe Sportive.
Morocco’s Maghreb Fès are also scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas.
With several former champions entering the contest, the second preliminary round is expected to test the contenders’ ability to handle pressure across two legs.
CAF Offers Financial Support To Eliminated Clubs
The Confederation of African Football has announced financial support of $100,000 for clubs eliminated during the preliminary rounds of its interclub competitions.
The funding is intended to help cover travel and logistical expenses associated with participation in continental football.
The measure comes as clubs face the financial demands of travelling across Africa for preliminary-round matches, even when they do not progress to the group stage.
The 16 successful teams in the Champions League second preliminary round will advance to the group phase, bringing them closer to the competition’s main title race.
As continental action gathers momentum, attention will also remain on the NPFL, where clubs are competing for domestic points and seeking consistency.
For Rangers, the immediate priority is MC Alger. For the other NPFL sides, Match Day 9 offers another opportunity to strengthen their league campaigns while Africa’s leading clubs pursue a place in the Champions League group stage.
