Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, formerly known as the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has expelled 28 students over offences ranging from examination malpractice to drug-related crimes.

The university’s Senate approved the expulsions during its 191st regular meeting after reviewing findings submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

Why the Students Were Expelled

In an official statement issued on Sunday, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, said the affected students committed serious violations of the institution’s code of conduct.

According to the university, the offences include:

  • Examination malpractice
  • Assault and conspiracy
  • Burglary and theft
  • Falsification of ‘O’ Level results for admission
  • Possession and use of illegal drugs

The Senate said it took the decision to protect the integrity of the institution and preserve campus safety.

15 Certificates Revoked

Beyond the expulsions, the Senate also withdrew the certificates of 15 former students. The university said the individuals repeatedly failed to honour invitations from the disciplinary committee at UniAbuja.

Officials explained that ignoring formal summons left the Senate with no option but to nullify their academic awards.

Nine Cleared, 33 Warned

Not all cases ended in punishment at UniAbuja.

Investigations cleared nine students after the committee found no evidence of wrongdoing. Meanwhile, 33 others received formal warnings for lesser infractions such as hostel racketeering and physical altercations.

Vice-Chancellor Speaks on Academic Integrity

UniAbuja Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s strict stance on discipline.

He said the institution will continue to enforce its rules without compromise.

“The academic integrity of the university remains non-negotiable. Anyone who breaches our regulations will face appropriate sanctions,” he stated, underscoring the values of UniAbuja.

Fawehinmi also disclosed that the management is strengthening counselling services and orientation programmes to guide students and reduce misconduct on campus.

Commitment to Standards

Yakubu Gowon University said the latest disciplinary measures reflect its commitment to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring a safe learning environment.

The institution urged students to uphold ethical conduct and comply with university regulations.
