Gunmen reportedly attacked miners in Marit village, Barkin Ladi LGA, as fresh violence heightens security concerns across Plateau State.
At least five miners were killed and two others injured after gunmen reportedly attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 1 p.m. on Saturday while the victims were carrying out mining activities at the site.
The casualty figures were confirmed by community sources, including Rwang Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), and community member Simon Mundat.
Tengwong described the incident as a painful development for the community and called on security agencies to strengthen protection around vulnerable locations.
Mundat also described the deaths as devastating, saying residents should be able to pursue legitimate economic activities without living in fear.
As of the time of filing, there was no official statement from security agencies providing details about the attackers, their motive or whether any arrests had been made.
Mining Site Attack Adds To Plateau Security Concerns
The Marit incident comes amid a series of attacks and security incidents in parts of Plateau State, particularly in Barkin Ladi and neighbouring local government areas.
Recent reports have documented violence around Marit Junction and other communities in Barkin Ladi. On September 20, troops reportedly responded to an attack on two residents at Marit Junction, where one victim was killed and another injured. Troops later repelled an attack on their personnel in the area.
The state government subsequently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas amid renewed attacks and reprisal incidents. The measure restricts movement between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The latest attack has therefore raised fresh concerns about the safety of people working at mining locations, particularly those operating in rural communities.
Another Mining-Related Deaths In Bokkos
The attack occurred days after another mining-related incident in Plateau State.
Four suspected illegal miners reportedly died after a sand excavation pit collapsed at Tangur community in Bokkos Local Government Area.
The two incidents occurred under different circumstances but have renewed attention on the risks associated with mining activities in the state.
Beyond security threats, mining communities also face dangers associated with unstable excavation sites and unregulated mining operations.
A recent Premium Times investigation documented hazardous mining conditions in parts of Plateau State, including young people working around narrow and unfortified mining pits.
Mining Safety Under Wider Scrutiny
The latest deaths also come amid a wider national debate over mining operations and the enforcement of regulations.
In neighbouring Niger State, the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps earlier in September triggered a government-ordered investigation and renewed questions about enforcement procedures.
The Federal Government said the circumstances surrounding the deaths would be investigated.
The Plateau incidents add another dimension to the discussion, highlighting both security threats facing people working at mining sites and the physical risks associated with mining operations.
Community Seeks Stronger Security
Tengwong urged security agencies to take urgent measures to prevent further attacks and protect communities in the area.
Mundat similarly appealed for increased security around Marit and other vulnerable locations.
He said continued attacks could undermine economic activities and increase anxiety among residents.
The latest incident also comes as security agencies continue patrols across parts of Barkin Ladi following recent attacks.
In one recent incident, troops reportedly repelled a suspected reprisal attack at Marit Junction after responding to an attack on two residents. Security forces said they subsequently intensified patrols in the area.
