The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has congratulated the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, on his 73rd birthday and 10th coronation anniversary.

Shaibu described the monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom and cultural preservation, praising his leadership and commitment to safeguarding the heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, the former Edo State Deputy Governor said the monarch’s decade on the throne had continued to inspire his subjects through the promotion of peace, cultural identity and respect for traditional institutions.

Shaibu also prayed for the Oba’s long life, sound health and divine wisdom, wishing him a joyous birthday and a memorable coronation anniversary.

Shaibu Praises Monarch’s Leadership

Shaibu said Oba Ewuare II had continued to uphold the dignity of the Benin traditional institution since ascending the throne in October 2016.

He noted that the Benin monarchy remained an important custodian of the kingdom’s customs, traditions, arts and collective history.

According to Shaibu, the monarch’s leadership has helped sustain cultural pride and strengthen the traditional institution’s place in community life.

He added that the anniversary provided an opportunity to recognise the responsibilities of traditional rulers in promoting peaceful coexistence, unity and shared values.

Benin Kingdom Marks A Decade Under Oba Ewuare II

Oba Ewuare II was crowned the 40th Oba of Benin in October 2016, succeeding his father, the late Oba Erediauwa, who died in April of that year.

The Benin monarchy remains an important institution in Edo State, with a history closely connected to the cultural, political and social identity of the Edo people.

The kingdom is internationally recognised for its artistic heritage, including its celebrated bronze and brass works, ivory carvings and other traditional crafts associated with the royal court.

The return of artefacts taken during the 1897 British punitive expedition has also remained an important issue in discussions about cultural restitution and the preservation of African heritage.

Oba Ewuare II has been associated with advocacy for the return of looted Benin artefacts and the protection of the kingdom’s cultural inheritance.

Shaibu Highlights Traditional Institutions’ Role In Peace

Shaibu described the Oba as a symbol of unity and fatherly guidance, emphasising the importance of traditional leadership in promoting peace and strengthening community relationships.

He noted that traditional rulers continue to play significant roles in cultural preservation, community engagement and dialogue, even as elected officials carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

The former deputy governor’s tribute reflects the cultural significance of the Benin throne and its continuing connection to the identity and heritage of Edo people.

NIS Chief Extends Birthday Wishes

Shaibu, who served as Edo State Deputy Governor from 2016 to 2024, currently leads the National Institute for Sports, a federal institution responsible for professional training and capacity development in Nigeria’s sports sector.

He expressed hope that Oba Ewuare II would continue to enjoy good health, long life and divine guidance while serving the Benin Kingdom.

Shaibu also wished the monarch and the people of the kingdom continued peace, progress and prosperity as celebrations mark the royal milestone.
