Arsenal delivered a commanding performance at the Emirates Stadium, thrashing League One side Wigan Athletic 4–0 to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 2020.

The dominant display saw Mikel Arteta’s men race into a four-goal lead within the opening 27 minutes, effectively ending the contest before half-time and reinforcing their credentials as contenders on multiple fronts this season.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute when Noni Madueke finished confidently after a precise assist from Eberechi Eze, who impressed with his creativity in midfield.

Arsenal doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Eze once again turned provider, picking out Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly slotted into the far corner to make it 2–0.

Wigan’s defensive woes worsened in the 23rd minute when Jack Hunt inadvertently turned Bukayo Saka’s cross into his own net. Moments later, Gabriel Jesus added the fourth with a composed chipped finish after being released through on goal.

The blistering first-half display underlined Arsenal’s attacking depth, even with squad rotation in place.

Arteta Eyes Historic Season

Speaking after the match, Arteta praised the intensity and cohesion of his players, especially those handed opportunities to gain minutes.

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League table, hold a place in the League Cup final, and remain active in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages — keeping alive ambitions of an unprecedented quadruple.

The North London club last lifted the FA Cup in 2020, a triumph that remains Arteta’s only major trophy as manager.

Squad Rotation and Injury Concern

The Gunners were forced into a late change when defender Riccardo Calafiori picked up an injury during the pre-match warm-up, prompting Saka’s inclusion.

Despite the adjustment, Arsenal maintained control throughout, showcasing fluid attacking play and disciplined defensive structure.

Wigan, currently battling relegation in League One under interim boss Glenn Whelan, struggled to cope with Arsenal’s tempo and technical quality.

Other FA Cup Results

Elsewhere in the fourth round:

  • Leeds United advanced after defeating Birmingham City 4–2 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time.

  • Wolves secured a narrow 1–0 win away at Grimsby thanks to Santiago Bueno’s second-half strike.

  • Fulham came from behind to beat Stoke City 2–1.

  • Sunderland edged Oxford United 1–0 to progress.

Arsenal will now turn their attention back to the Premier League title race as they prepare for a midweek clash against Wolves.
