Former PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur Dies at 90

The prominent Nigerian businessman and elder statesman passed away in Abuja just days shy of his 91st birthday.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and veteran political leader, has died at the age of 90.

The family confirmed that the elder statesman passed away on Saturday at his residence in Abuja following a prolonged illness. He died just three days before his 91st birthday. Peoples Gazette.
Tukur served as the National Chairman of the PDP from March 2012 to January 2014 during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Prior to his leadership of the party, he established himself as a prominent figure in Nigerian public administration and corporate enterprise over several decades.

Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur gained national prominence as the General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) between 1975 and 1982. He later entered elective politics during the Second Republic and was elected Governor of the defunct Gongola State in 1983.

He also served as the Federal Minister of Industries under the military regime of General Sani Abacha from 1993 to 1995. Peoples Gazette.

On the international stage, Tukur championed African economic development as the Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group. He held the prestigious traditional title of Tafidan Adamawa. Peoples Gazette.

President Bola Tinubu led national tributes on Saturday, describing Tukur as a “towering figure” whose distinguished career spanned governance, industry, politics, and pan-African leadership.
Family representatives confirmed that his remains will be transported to Adamawa State for final burial rites at the Palace of the Lamido of Adamawa in Yola, in accordance with Islamic tradition.
