ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect.

The Presidency confirmed the development on Monday, stating that Egbetokun stepped down after submitting a resignation letter that cited pressing family considerations.

President Tinubu commended Egbetokun for his years of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.

He praised the outgoing police chief for strengthening internal security operations and maintaining professionalism during his tenure.

Meanwhile, Egbetokun assumed office in June 2023. His four-year tenure was scheduled to end in June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act 2020.

The President appointed Disu in acting capacity in response to ongoing national security challenges.

Next Steps: Police Council and Senate Confirmation

In line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination for substantive appointment because it is an important step in the process.

In addition, after the Council’s review, the President will forward Disu’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
