Peter Edokpolor and Akor Adams scored late as Eric Chelle’s experimental Super Eagles recovered from a two-goal deficit to extend Nigeria’s unbeaten record against Russia.
Nigeria fought back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Russia in an entertaining international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday.
Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles an early lead before Russia overturned the deficit through Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak.
Aleksey Miranchuk then extended Russia’s advantage nine minutes after half-time, leaving Nigeria facing another difficult result after their recent 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
But Eric Chelle’s much-changed side responded through debutant Peter Edokpolor before Akor Adams completed the comeback in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Iheanacho Makes Winning Return
Iheanacho put Nigeria ahead in the 10th minute after finishing a move created by Abdullahi Bewene.
The goal marked a positive return for the forward, who had been recalled to the national team after missing Nigeria’s recent 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
His strike was also Nigeria’s only goal of the opening half as Russia gradually took control.
Sadulaev equalised in the 30th minute before Kislyak completed Russia’s turnaround in first-half stoppage time.
The hosts therefore entered the interval 2-1 ahead.
Russia Move Two Goals Clear
Russia strengthened their position nine minutes after the restart when Miranchuk scored to make it 3-1.
Nigeria had struggled defensively against a Russian side that entered the match after a 6-0 victory over Namibia.
Chelle responded with changes as he sought more attacking energy from his side.
The substitutions eventually changed the game.
Edokpolor Starts The Fightback
Nineteen-year-old Peter Edokpolor reduced the deficit in the 78th minute on his Super Eagles debut.
The forward drove through the Russian defence before producing the finish that made it 3-2.
The goal transformed the final stages of the match.
Russia had appeared to be heading for victory, but Nigeria began applying sustained pressure as the Super Eagles searched for an equaliser.
Adams Completes The Comeback
Nigeria finally found the breakthrough in the fourth minute of added time.
Emmanuel Fernandez initiated the counter-attack with a header from the back before Umar Abdullahi advanced and supplied the final pass.
Akor Adams then finished the move to make it 3-3.
The late goal rescued Nigeria from defeat and completed a comeback that had looked unlikely when Russia went 3-1 ahead.
Chelle Tests Nigeria’s Squad Depth
The match gave Chelle an opportunity to examine several players outside his established starting group.
Nigeria entered the fixture with a depleted squad after several withdrawals and player-availability problems.
The NFF said nine players made their Super Eagles debut during the match, underlining the experimental nature of Chelle’s selection. (The NFF)
That approach created defensive problems, but it also produced two of Nigeria’s most important moments.
Edokpolor scored on his debut, while Adams came off the bench to rescue the result.
For Chelle, the performances provide additional information as he continues to assess the squad ahead of Nigeria’s next competitive fixtures.
Nigeria Remain Unbeaten Against Russia
The draw maintains Nigeria’s unbeaten record against Russia after two senior international meetings.
The teams first met in Moscow on June 6, 2025, when they played out a 1-1 draw.
Russia took the lead through a Semi Ajayi own goal before Tolu Arokodare equalised for Nigeria in the second half. The NFF confirmed that Tuesday’s fixture was the teams’ second meeting in 16 months.
Nigeria now have two draws from two meetings with Russia.
A Positive Ending To A Difficult Window
The 3-3 draw does not erase Nigeria’s recent problems.
The Super Eagles had suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their previous competitive match, while injuries, withdrawals and club restrictions weakened Chelle’s squad.
However, the response in Nizhny Novgorod provided a different picture.
Nigeria twice recovered from setbacks during the match and ultimately overturned a two-goal deficit.
The performance also gave several fringe players valuable exposure at senior international level.
For Chelle, the biggest takeaway may therefore be the depth available to Nigeria rather than the friendly’s result alone.
The Super Eagles will return to competitive action in November when they face Tanzania in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Until then, Chelle has a group of new performances to assess — and a late comeback against Russia that showed his experimental side can still respond under pressure.
