A 19-member Nigerian delegation is scheduled to depart for Nairobi on October 13 ahead of the inaugural continental competition running from October 15 to 28.
Team Nigeria will depart for Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, October 13, to participate in the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships scheduled for October 15 to 28, 2026.
The Nigerian contingent comprises 10 boxers, with five male and five female athletes expected to compete across different weight categories at the continental tournament.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the delegation has 19 members, including athletes and officials.
The team is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday, October 14, a day before the championship begins.
The competition will give Nigerian boxers an opportunity to test their abilities against elite opponents from across Africa while gaining experience at the international level.
Nigeria Targets Strong Showing In Nairobi
Nigeria’s decision to field five male and five female boxers provides representation across both divisions at the championship.
The athletes will face a continental test of their technical skills, tactical preparation and competitive readiness as they seek to make an impact at the inaugural edition.
The competition also offers an opportunity for Nigeria’s boxing administrators to assess the progress of the country’s elite athletes against international opposition.
Performances in Nairobi could help identify areas requiring further technical development and preparation for future continental and global competitions.
However, Nigeria’s medal prospects will depend on the boxers’ performances, the quality of their opponents and their ability to execute their preparations in the ring.
19-Member Delegation To Arrive Before Opening
The 19-member Nigerian contingent is scheduled to leave the country on Tuesday and arrive in Kenya the following day.
The planned arrival ahead of the October 15 opening will give the delegation time to settle in and prepare for the competition.
The NSC has expressed confidence in the team and urged the athletes to represent Nigeria with discipline, determination and a commitment to excellence.
The commission said it wished the boxers success as they prepare to compete against athletes from other African countries.
However, the statement did not disclose the names of the 10 boxers, their respective weight categories or the full composition of the delegation.
Those details would provide a clearer picture of Nigeria’s representation and the match-ups awaiting the team.
Championship Offers Platform For African Boxing
The African Boxing Elite Championships will bring together elite boxers from across the continent for the inaugural competition in Nairobi.
For Nigeria, participation offers an opportunity to compete for continental honours and gain experience against a broader range of opponents.
The tournament will also provide a benchmark for evaluating the country’s current crop of elite boxers and identifying areas for improvement.
Nigeria’s results could inform future athlete development, technical preparation and participation in international amateur boxing competitions.
As the contingent prepares to depart, attention will turn to the athletes’ performances when competition begins on October 15.
The NSC has urged the team to uphold Nigeria’s reputation for discipline and competitive commitment throughout the championship.
