President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced fresh military support from France following a high-level phone conversation with President Emmanuel Macron, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to combat growing security threats.
France Backs Nigeria’s Security Push
Speaking in Lagos during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, Tinubu said the discussion with Macron focused on strengthening defence cooperation.
He noted that the partnership will include the supply of military equipment and strategic support to help Nigeria tackle terrorism more effectively.
“Insecurity threatens our development and prosperity. We must confront it decisively,” Tinubu said.
Fresh Attacks Heighten Urgency
The development follows recent deadly explosions in Maiduguri, where coordinated bombings killed at least 23 people.
The attacks targeted key locations, including the Post Office area, Monday Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, raising fresh concerns over safety in the North-East.
Wider Global Engagement
In addition, Tinubu revealed that his recent visit to the United Kingdom also centred on securing military assistance.
During the trip, he met with King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer to deepen bilateral ties and explore investment opportunities.
He stressed that Nigeria is engaging multiple international partners to strengthen its overall security architecture.
Call to Governors
Meanwhile, the president urged state governors to align with federal policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare and tackling crime.
He also warned that global tensions—particularly in the Middle East—could drive up inflation and worsen economic conditions.
According to him, rising energy and transport costs may further strain households, making it essential for state governments to introduce relief measures.
Governors Back Security Reforms
At the meeting, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, reaffirmed support for the president’s security agenda.
He disclosed that discussions on establishing state police are ongoing, with proposals expected to reach the National Assembly of Nigeria soon.
Why This Matters
Nigeria’s push for international military support highlights the urgency of tackling insecurity. Stronger partnerships could improve intelligence, equipment, and operational capacity in the fight against terrorism.
