Sabalenka Finally Lifts Indian Wells Trophy

World number one Aryna Sabalenka captured her first Indian Wells Open title on Sunday after defeating Elena Rybakina in a thrilling three-set final, 3–6, 6–3, 7–6(6).

The Belarusian tennis star produced a resilient comeback in the decisive set to seal her 23rd career title, finally conquering a tournament that had previously brought her heartbreak.

The victory marked a major turning point for Sabalenka, who had lost two previous finals at the prestigious California event including a defeat to Rybakina in 2023.

Rybakina Starts Strong

Rybakina, the Kazakh world-class competitor and former Grand Slam champion, dominated the early stages of the match.

She broke Sabalenka’s serve to take a 4–2 lead in the opening set, repeatedly targeting the Belarusian’s backhand and maintaining aggressive baseline pressure.

Rybakina eventually closed out the set 6–3 — the first set Sabalenka dropped in the entire tournament.

Sabalenka Responds With Powerful Comeback

Sabalenka regrouped quickly in the second set.

Although Rybakina broke her early, the Belarusian responded with a strong service game and began dictating rallies with powerful groundstrokes.

Sabalenka secured two crucial breaks to move ahead 4–1, using her trademark power and improved consistency.

She sealed the set with four aces, while Rybakina committed 13 unforced errors, allowing the world No.1 to level the match.

Deciding Set Delivers High Drama

The final set delivered a tense battle between two of the women’s game’s biggest stars.

Sabalenka broke early to lead 3–1, but Rybakina fought back, leveling the match at 5–5 and briefly taking the lead.

Sabalenka refused to fade.

She forced a tiebreak, where both players pushed each other to the limit before the Belarusian edged ahead 8–6 to secure the title.

As the final point landed, Sabalenka dropped to her knees in relief after finally claiming the coveted desert crown.

Sabalenka Praises Rival

During the trophy ceremony, Sabalenka praised her opponent and the tournament organisers.

I want to congratulate Elena. I know we will face each other many more times,” Sabalenka said.
This tournament is a tennis paradise. I’m always happy to come here every year, and I thank God I finally got this trophy.”

A Memorable Week for the World No.1

The triumph capped an extraordinary week for the 27-year-old.

Sabalenka arrived at the tournament following her recent engagement to Brazilian entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis, adding a personal milestone to an already memorable period.

This is a dream come true,” Sabalenka said.
Getting a puppy, getting engaged and winning a title — it’s a week I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Global Tennis Fans React

The victory further strengthens Sabalenka’s position at the top of the women’s tennis rankings and reinforces her status as one of the sport’s most dominant players.
