The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and substandard products worth over N939 million in Awka, reinforcing its nationwide enforcement campaign against unsafe goods.

Officials carried out the exercise on Friday at a state waste management dumpsite in Anambra State, however, the agency said it recovered the items during operations across the South-East.

What Was Destroyed

The seized products included:

  • Expired and falsified medicines
  • Contaminated food items
  • Substandard cosmetics
  • Faulty medical equipment

NAFDAC said these items pose serious health risks, including treatment failure, prolonged illness, and death.

NAFDAC’s Warning

Representing Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye, Regional Director Martins Iluyomade said the agency will sustain strict enforcement.

“NAFDAC will not tolerate anyone who puts Nigerians at risk through fake or expired products,” he stated.

In addition, he said that the destroyed goods had an estimated street value of N939,077,209 and were seized through surveillance, raids, and intelligence-led operations.

Stakeholders Support Effort

The agency noted that some products were voluntarily surrendered by members of the National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers in Anambra and Enugu states.

However, officials said collaboration with stakeholders remains key to tackling the spread of counterfeit goods.

Public Advisory

NAFDAC urged Nigerians to:

  • Buy only products with valid registration numbers
  • Report suspicious drugs or products
  • Avoid unverified vendors

Why It Matters

Meanwhile, Fake and substandard drugs remain a major public health threat in Nigeria. NAFDAC’s enforcement actions aim to reduce circulation and protect consumers.
