Move comes a day after a federal judge ordered the restoration of CNN, MS NOW and Politico’s White House access.
The White House has excluded CNN from travelling aboard Air Force One with President Donald Trump for his Saturday trip to Tennessee, escalating an ongoing dispute between the administration and several major US media organisations.
CNN had been scheduled to provide coverage of Trump’s trip to Knoxville as part of the White House television press pool, a rotating arrangement in which participating networks cover presidential events when space is limited and share footage and reporting with other broadcasters.
The White House announced the change in guidance released Friday night, leaving CNN off the television pool for the trip.
The decision means CNN will not perform the pool duties it had been scheduled to undertake on behalf of other major television networks.
According to the Los Angeles Times, CNN’s place was assigned to Real America’s Voice News, although CNN reported that no replacement outlet was listed in the White House guidance it reviewed.
Dispute Follows White House Media Ban
The latest development comes days after Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House.
Trump said the organisations were being excluded because of what he described as inaccurate or false reporting about his administration. The three outlets disputed the action and challenged it in federal court.
The dispute escalated on September 19 when reporters from the three organisations were denied entry to the White House and some journalists had their credentials confiscated.
The organisations argued that the restrictions violated constitutional protections and improperly targeted them because of their journalism.
Judge Orders Access Restored
On Thursday, US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a temporary restraining order requiring the White House to restore the journalists’ access for 14 days while the legal challenge proceeds.
Kelly said the media organisations were likely to succeed on their claim that the administration had revoked their press credentials without constitutionally adequate due process.
The order directed the administration to return, reinstate and restore the reporters’ access to the White House.
Reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico subsequently regained access to the White House after an initial period in which some were still turned away despite the court order.
The order, however, did not directly settle every question surrounding media access to presidential travel or the operation of the television press pool.
Television Press Pool Disrupted
The dispute has also affected the traditional television pool used to cover presidential activities.
The pool includes ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC. Its members rotate responsibility for providing television coverage when journalists cannot all travel with the president.
After CNN was barred from the White House, the other major networks temporarily declined to participate in the pool in solidarity with the network.
The pool briefly resumed operations on Friday after the court order restored access to the affected outlets.
CBS served as the designated pool provider for some of Trump’s Friday events, while CNN also resumed pool duties at a separate event.
The White House’s decision to exclude CNN from Saturday’s presidential trip therefore raises fresh questions about whether the rotating television pool can continue operating under the current arrangement.
Trump Heads To Tennessee
Trump is scheduled to travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, on Saturday to attend a college football game between the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas.
CNN was expected to cover the trip on behalf of the broader television pool, but the White House decision prevents the network from carrying out that assignment aboard Air Force One.
The latest development comes as the legal dispute between CNN, MS NOW, Politico and the Trump administration continues.
Kelly’s order currently covers a 14-day period, while the media organisations are seeking longer-term relief as their constitutional challenge proceeds.
The White House and CNN had not immediately issued detailed public explanations addressing the decision to exclude CNN from Saturday’s flight.
For now, the dispute has moved beyond access to the White House grounds to the separate question of which organisations can participate in the press pool covering the president’s travel.
