The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education assessment specialist Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

Dangut officially assumed office on October 1, 2026, for an initial five-year tenure that will run until September 2031, according to a report by Blueprint.

He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becomes the 14th person to serve as Registrar to Council.

His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s governing Council during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Over 30 Years In Education, Examination Administration

Dangut brings more than three decades of experience in education and examination administration to his new position.

He began his professional career in 1994 as a teacher at St Louis College, Jos, where he also participated in WAEC examination activities as an examiner.

He joined WAEC four years later and subsequently served in several technical and administrative positions covering test development, examination security, post-examination operations, field administration and national coordination.

His previous positions included Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division in Lagos, Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi, as well as Branch Controller in Yola.

Dangut also served as Controller of the Post-Examinations Department and Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja before becoming Deputy Registrar and Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office.

Dangut Led WAEC Digital Reforms

Dangut headed WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026, a period that featured several technology-driven changes to examination administration.

According to the report, initiatives implemented during his tenure included the expansion of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialised question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

The Nigeria National Office also introduced or strengthened platforms covering digital certificates, electronic learning, records management and examination logistics.

The initiatives formed part of WAEC’s broader move towards technology-driven assessment and reduced dependence on conventional examination processes.

Academic And Professional Background

Dangut’s academic background spans agricultural science and education management.

He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, specialising in Animal Production, in 1991 and a Master’s degree in Animal Science in 1994.

He subsequently earned a PhD in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master’s degree in Education, specialising in Administration and Planning, in 2020.

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.

Experience Beyond WAEC

His professional activities have extended to several institutions in Nigeria’s education sector.

Dangut has served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board.

He has also represented WAEC at national education policy forums, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and National Council on Education.

At the continental level, he serves as the West African sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

Dangut has also contributed to academic publications and presented papers at professional and academic conferences.

New Role At Regional Level

As Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dangut will oversee WAEC’s regional operations and work with its member countries on examination and assessment matters.

His appointment comes as examination bodies across West Africa increasingly adopt digital testing, electronic marking and certification systems while confronting issues surrounding examination integrity and access.

Dangut’s elevation also marks a transition from leading WAEC’s Nigeria National Office to overseeing the examination body’s wider regional operations.

His tenure is expected to run until September 2031, subject to the terms of his appointment.
