The Jigawa State Government has entered into an investment partnership with India’s Srinivasa Poultry Farms to strengthen poultry production, improve access to day-old chicks and address supply challenges facing farmers.

The state Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Salim Abdurrahman Lawal, described the deal as the administration’s greatest achievement, citing its potential to address longstanding difficulties in the poultry sector.

Lawal spoke during a joint press conference with visiting officials of Srinivasa Farms in Dutse over the weekend.

He said poultry farmers in northern Nigeria face high costs and unreliable supplies of day-old chicks, partly because chicks are transported over long distances from production centres in southern Nigeria.

According to the commissioner, chicks supplied to northern farmers travel between 1,200 and 1,500 kilometres, a journey that can affect their condition and feeding response.

He said the proposed hatchery in Jigawa would reduce the transportation distance to approximately 150 kilometres, making supplies more accessible to poultry farmers.

Jigawa Poultry Investment Targets Lower Supply Costs

Lawal said the proposed investment would introduce delivery facilities, encourage youth participation and support farmers through a state-backed assistance scheme.

The initiative is expected to improve the availability of day-old chicks and address logistical challenges that increase costs for poultry businesses across the region.

Reliable access to healthy chicks is an important requirement for poultry farmers seeking to maintain production and meet demand for poultry products.

The commissioner said the partnership would help address some of the sector’s persistent constraints and strengthen poultry farming in Jigawa State.

Srinivasa Farms Promises Technical Support

Srinivasa Farms Vice President, Senthil Kumar Krishnan, said the partnership would support rural communities and boost poultry production through technical assistance and quality products.

He said the joint venture was designed to help strengthen the poultry value chain and create opportunities for communities involved in livestock production.

The partnership could also support wider participation in poultry farming by improving access to production inputs and technical expertise.

Partnership Targets Poultry Sector Development

The proposed hatchery and associated support measures are intended to reduce the logistical burden on northern poultry farmers and improve the supply chain for day-old chicks.

The planned involvement of young people and the proposed state support scheme are also expected to create opportunities for participation in the poultry sector.

However, the investment’s overall impact will depend on implementation, the availability of quality chicks, delivery arrangements and the support provided to farmers.

The Jigawa State Government and Srinivasa Farms are expected to advance the partnership as part of efforts to strengthen poultry production and support rural economic activity.
