Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have declared a three-day warning strike from October 2 to 4, 2026, citing worsening economic hardship affecting workers and their dependants.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise public servants for the industrial action, which is scheduled to begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, and end on Sunday, October 4. The directive was contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by JNPSNC National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga.

Why Workers Are Going On Strike

The JNPSNC said the decision followed what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to address requests submitted to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21.

The council said the strike would involve public servants across the federal, state and local government services.

In the circular, the union said the prevailing economic and mental hardships had become increasingly difficult for workers, their dependants and vulnerable Nigerians.

“The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating,” the council stated.

Workers Demand N500 Petrol

Among the council’s key demands is a reduction of petrol prices to N500 per litre.

The JNPSNC had also called for an immediate wage award to cushion workers against rising living costs.

Another major demand is the establishment of a tripartite committee to commence negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had given the Federal Government until September 30 to address the demands before the planned industrial action.

Strike To Affect Three Tiers Of Government

The council directed workers in federal, state and local government services to participate in the warning strike.

The JNPSNC said the action was intended to draw attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.

The directive also instructed union leaders to immediately disseminate the strike notice and mobilise members across the country.

JNPSNC Maintains October 2 Deadline

The latest circular confirms that the planned action will proceed from midnight on October 2.

The JNPSNC’s position follows its earlier warning that public servants would embark on the three-day action if the Federal Government failed to address the demands by September 30.

As of the issuance of the October 1 circular, the council maintained that the strike would run until October 4.
