Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has celebrated the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing the victory as a major political achievement secured despite what he characterised as strong opposition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following Governor Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
While congratulating his uncle, the singer described the election as a tough contest, pointing to the number of influential political figures who campaigned against the incumbent governor.
Davido said the governor’s victory was particularly significant because he believed Adeleke had faced a large coalition of political opponents but still emerged victorious.
Davido Praises Osun Voters
The singer attributed Adeleke’s success largely to the support he received from voters across Osun State.
Davido praised residents for standing behind the governor and protecting their votes during the election, saying the level of public support for the Adeleke family was overwhelming.
Reflecting on the events of election day, he said he became emotional on several occasions because of the strong support shown by the people.
According to Davido, the election should provide an important lesson for political leaders across Nigeria: leaders who genuinely serve their communities are more likely to receive the people’s backing at the polls.
He urged other governors and political leaders to learn from Adeleke’s experience by prioritising the welfare and interests of the people they govern.
Davido also expressed appreciation to Osun residents for supporting his uncle and the Adeleke family despite what he described as attempts to intimidate voters and influence the electoral process through vote-buying.
Davido Turns Attention to Youth and Sports
With the election now over, Davido said he intends to devote more attention to initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for young people in Osun State.
As chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, the singer revealed that he had deliberately delayed some of his plans until after the election.
One of the projects being considered is a recreational centre designed to give young people access to sporting and leisure facilities.
The proposed centre could include football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts, creating a space where young people can develop their talents, participate in sports and engage in healthy recreational activities.
Davido said his goal is to create more opportunities for young people to discover and develop their abilities.
Adeleke Secures Second Term
Davido has remained one of Governor Adeleke’s most prominent celebrity supporters and played an active role in his campaign ahead of the election.
Adeleke secured another term in office after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the August 15 election.
Following the governor’s victory, Davido said his attention would now shift from campaigning to supporting initiatives that can improve the lives of young people across Osun State, particularly through sports, recreation and talent development.
