Police said the 27-year-old suspect was arrested after community members helped investigators trace her following the discovery of the infant.
The FCT Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman over the death of her newborn in the Jabi area of Abuja.
The command said officers recovered the body of a male infant from a nearby bush on October 4, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, police received a distress call at about 10:30pm.
Operatives from the Jabi Division responded to the location and recovered the infant.
Police said the child was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the death.
Following the discovery, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, ordered a manhunt for the person responsible.
Police Trace Suspect
The police said assistance from members of the immediate community helped investigators identify and arrest the suspect.
The woman was identified as Precious Yohanna, 27.
Police said she is from Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State and resides in the Daki-Biu/Jabi area of Abuja.
Further investigation, according to the command, identified Yohanna as the mother of the deceased infant.
Police alleged that she gave birth inside her room on October 3 at about 4pm.
The command further alleged that the suspect subsequently caused fatal injuries to the newborn before abandoning the child.
According to SP Adeh, the suspect told investigators that she acted because of her feelings towards the baby’s father.
The police did not provide further details about the alleged dispute between the suspect and the child’s father.
Investigation Underway
The FCT Police Command condemned the incident and described it as a serious violation of human life.
CP Sanusi also commended residents who assisted the police with information that led to the arrest.
The command said the suspect remains in police custody while investigators continue their inquiry.
Police said the suspect will be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.
The case adds another criminal investigation to the FCT Police Command’s workload as officers seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
The police have not indicated that anyone else has been arrested in connection with the case.
Police Urge Public Vigilance
The command urged residents to report suspicious activities and incidents to the nearest police station.
It also provided emergency contact numbers for residents seeking police assistance.
The numbers are 08028940883 and 08032003913.
The police said information from members of the public remains important to investigations, particularly where incidents occur within residential communities.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death is ongoing.
