Justus Kelley, the 31-year-old representative of Virginia, has made history after becoming the first married mother to legitimately win the Miss USA title.
Kelley was crowned Miss USA 2026 on August 27 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida, after competing against representatives from across the United States.
Her victory also made her the first woman in her 30s to win the national title.
Balancing Motherhood and Pageant Preparation
Kelley is married to her college sweetheart, Tyler Kelley, and has been a licensed foster parent with her husband for nearly two years.
The couple currently foster two siblings, while Kelley also supports children in foster care through her organisation, Foster Footprints.
During her preparation, Kelley adjusted her training schedule around her family responsibilities. She reportedly used her children’s nap times for preparation and completed workouts after their bedtime routines.
Her training included walking with her baby in a carrier, doing squats while holding her toddler and practising interview questions while feeding her child.
Miss USA Changes Eligibility Rules
Kelley’s victory followed the organisation’s 2023 decision to remove restrictions that previously prevented married women and mothers from competing.
The organisation also removed the former age limit, allowing women aged 18 and above to participate.
In 1957, Mary Leona Gage briefly held the Miss USA title before organisers stripped her of the crown after discovering that she was married and had two sons.
Kelley’s victory is therefore recognised as the first legitimate Miss USA win by a married mother.
“Does It Fit Car Seats?”
Kelley’s family responsibilities also featured in her reaction to the prize package.
The 2026 Miss USA package reportedly exceeds $685,000 and includes a $150,000 salary, a Range Rover, a one-year lease at a luxury Miami apartment and a $30,000 wardrobe for the Miss Universe competition.
When she learned that a Range Rover was included, Kelley reportedly asked, “Does it fit car seats?”
Message Beyond the Crown
Kelley has said her victory demonstrates that women can pursue their ambitions while raising families and managing other responsibilities.
She is expected to carry out official duties as Miss USA and represent the United States at the Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico later this year.
