The Super Falcons forward leaves Washington Spirit after scoring 12 goals and providing three assists, with her former club retaining a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons forward Gift Monday has joined Boston Legacy FC from Washington Spirit in a trade involving $500,000 in transfer-threshold funds.
Both clubs announced the deal on Thursday, October 8, 2026, confirming that Washington would receive the allocation funds and retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause if Boston subsequently transfers or trades the Nigerian international to another club.
The reported $500,000, equivalent to approximately ₦750 million at an illustrative exchange rate, represents transfer-threshold funds under the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) framework. It should not be interpreted as a straightforward cash transfer fee.
The move gives Boston another attacking option as the club continues to develop its squad and improve its competitive position in the American women’s league.
Monday joins Boston after making a significant contribution to Washington Spirit since arriving from Spanish side UD Tenerife in March 2025.
Monday Leaves Washington With 12 Goals
The 24-year-old forward recorded 12 goals and three assists in 48 appearances for Washington across competitions, according to the club’s announcement.
She also played an important role in the Spirit’s run to the 2025 NWSL Championship final, scoring twice at Audi Field during the playoffs.
One of her standout performances came on September 28, 2025, when she scored a hat-trick against Houston Dash in a 4–0 victory.
Monday completed the hat-trick in 35 minutes and 52 seconds, setting the record for the fastest hat-trick from kick-off in NWSL history.
The performance highlighted her finishing ability and capacity to exploit space in the attacking third.
Washington Spirit sporting director James Hocken praised her contribution, noting that she had played an important role in the club’s progress to the championship final.
The club also wished the Nigerian forward success as she begins a new chapter with Boston.
Boston Expects More Attacking Threat
Boston Legacy FC general manager Domè Guasch said Monday would add another dimension to the team’s attack.
Guasch highlighted her ability to contribute to a high-pressing system, create scoring opportunities and threaten opponents in the final third.
He also emphasised her team-oriented approach, indicating that Boston values her contribution beyond individual goals.
The club is seeking to improve its competitive position in the NWSL, and Monday’s experience could provide additional options in attack.
Her familiarity with the league may also help her adapt more quickly than a player arriving from a different competition.
However, her impact will depend on playing opportunities, tactical integration and the service she receives from her new teammates.
From Spain To American Women’s Football
Before moving to Washington in 2025, Monday spent approximately two and a half seasons with UD Tenerife in Spain.
She recorded more than 65 appearances and 26 goal contributions during her time with the Spanish club, according to Boston Legacy FC.
Earlier in her career, she played for Nigerian sides FC Robo and COD United Amazons.
Her career has taken her through Nigerian, Spanish and American football, giving her experience in different competitive environments.
The Boston move provides another opportunity to develop her game and establish a more prominent role in the NWSL.
What The Deal Means For Washington And Boston
The financial arrangement gives Washington $500,000 in transfer-threshold funds and a potential future benefit through the 20 per cent sell-on clause.
If Boston later transfers or trades Monday to another club under the agreement, Washington could receive a share of that subsequent transaction.
For Boston, the trade secures Monday’s services while adding an experienced forward with a proven scoring record in the league.
The financial terms are also notable because transfer-threshold funds operate within the NWSL’s roster framework and are not necessarily equivalent to a conventional cash payment.
The approximate ₦750 million equivalent depends on the exchange rate used and may change with currency movements.
Super Falcons Connection
Monday made her senior debut for Nigeria in 2019 and was included in the Super Falcons squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Her performances in the United States remain relevant to Nigeria’s efforts to maintain attacking depth ahead of future international competitions.
A productive spell at Boston could strengthen her case for continued selection, although national-team opportunities will depend on form, fitness and competition for places.
For now, Monday’s immediate challenge is to settle into her new club and translate her experience into consistent performances.
Her move represents another career opportunity for a Nigerian international competing abroad, with Boston hoping her pace, movement and finishing will strengthen its attack.
