First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to reduce food waste and adopt sustainable practices to protect the environment.
She made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 World Cleanup Day, observed on Sunday, September 20, under the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
Tinubu said the campaign’s focus on food waste was important amid disruptions to food production and supply caused by climate change, conflicts and other global challenges.
She urged households, businesses and communities to become more responsible in how they purchase, prepare, consume and preserve food.
The First Lady also called for proper refuse disposal and the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices.
“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she said.
The United Nations and UN-Habitat identified food waste reduction as a key focus of World Cleanup Day 2026, linking responsible consumption with cleaner and more sustainable cities.
