A new NSCDC commandant has assumed office as authorities investigate the deaths of suspected illegal miners in custody.
The Niger State Police Command has sealed the headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna as investigations begin into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development in a statement issued to Blueprint at the weekend.
He said the action followed a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Police Begin Forensic Investigation
The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, directed Operation Flush patrol teams to secure and cordon off the facility.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, has also commenced preliminary forensic investigations.
According to the police, the investigation aims to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The command assured the victims’ families and members of the public that the process would be conducted professionally and in accordance with the law.
Police also appealed for calm, patience and cooperation as the investigation continues.
New NSCDC Commandant Assumes Duty
Meanwhile, Abdullahi Salisu Kabara has been deployed to Niger State as the new NSCDC commandant.
He took over from Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, who was suspended following the deaths.
In his maiden address, Kabara expressed sadness over the incident and sympathised with the families of the deceased.
He said the responsibility of enforcing the law must go alongside protecting the dignity, safety and welfare of people in custody.
Kabara also assured the public that justice and fairness would guide the ongoing investigation.
20 NSCDC Officers Suspended
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo suspended 20 additional NSCDC officers alongside the state commandant to allow an independent investigation.
The affected personnel reportedly include officers responsible for station security, arrests, investigations, legal affairs and guard duties.
The officers may face disciplinary procedures and police questioning to establish their roles, actions or omissions before the deaths.
The suspension does not establish individual responsibility or guilt. Any further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
