The human rights lawyer rejects payment for the assignment and vows to expose any attempt to suppress the truth.

Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has accepted an appointment to the Federal Government’s 10-member committee investigating the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State.

The detainees died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, following arrests during operations against alleged illegal mining.

Adeyanju confirmed his appointment on Saturday, September 19, saying he would participate to protect the victims’ interests and help establish the truth.

Adeyanju Rejects Payment

The activist urged the Federal Government not to provide committee members with stipends, honoraria or other financial benefits.

He described the assignment as a national duty and said he would personally cover his accommodation, transportation and other expenses.

Adeyanju also warned that he would expose any attempt to compromise the investigation or conceal wrongdoing.

“The victims deserve justice,” he said, stressing the need for a transparent process.

Federal Government Constitutes 10-Member Committee

The Federal Government established the committee following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a comprehensive and unhindered investigation.

Retired DSS Deputy Director-General Jonathan Kure chairs the committee, while Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma (SAN), a former Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, serves as secretary.

Other members include medical experts, security officials, representatives of the Minna Emirate Council and Niger State Government, the Miners Association of Nigeria, journalist Zainab Suleiman Okino and public affairs analyst George Agbakahi.

The committee has two weeks to complete its work and submit its report to the Minister of Interior.

Cause of Death Remains Under Investigation

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation. Reports have raised concerns about detention conditions, while authorities have not established the definitive cause of death.

The committee is expected to examine the arrests, detention conditions, possible negligence and responsibility, alongside measures to prevent a recurrence.
