State Police Bill to Reach Tinubu on September 3, Says Presidential Working Group
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has announced that the Executive Bill on state policing will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026, as part of efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing system.
Speaking after the group’s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the committee is working on a seven-week, milestone-driven timetable running from July 27 to September 14, 2026.
According to Gbajabiamila, the completed Executive Bill will first be submitted to President Tinubu for approval. Once approved, the draft will be opened for nationwide consultation before it is revised and formally transmitted to the National Assembly.
He explained that the public consultation will give Nigerians the opportunity to review the proposed legislation, including its provisions, safeguards, funding framework and transition plans.
The working group also invited stakeholders, organisations and members of the public to submit memoranda, position papers and practical recommendations to strengthen the proposed National Policing Bill.
President Tinubu inaugurated the Presidential Working Group in July 2026 to prepare the legal framework for the implementation of state policing across Nigeria.
