The American filmmaker says his intense work ethic and early focus on personal growth shaped his approach to long-term relationships.
Billionaire filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry has shared his reasons for choosing to remain unmarried throughout his career.
Speaking during an appearance on The Pivot Podcast, the 57-year-old creator explained that his intense dedication to building his entertainment empire consumed much of his personal life.
Perry noted that his early years were focused heavily on overcoming childhood trauma and building financial security, leaving little space to nurture a traditional marriage.
“I spent my entire 20s, 30s, and 40s working, grinding, and building. I didn’t want to get married and bring someone into that intense lifestyle where I couldn’t be fully present,” Perry said.

The Madea creator was previously in a long-term relationship with model Gelila Bekele for over a decade. The pair, who share a nine-year-old son, Aman, quietly separated in 2020 while maintaining a co-parenting relationship.
Perry emphasized that fatherhood remains his primary focus, adding that he prioritizes being present for his son over romantic pursuits.
He added that while he respects marriage, he feels comfortable with the personal choices that brought him financial freedom and emotional peace.
