Kenya is preparing for one of the biggest sporting assignments in Africa’s history after Nairobi was selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
The decision makes Kenya the first African country to stage the senior global athletics championships.
World Athletics announced Nairobi as the host on September 15 following a Council meeting in Budapest, with Munich selected to host the 2031 edition.
The African Union has since welcomed the decision, describing it as a milestone for Kenya and the continent’s sporting community.
For Kenya, however, the celebration now gives way to preparation.
The country has three years to turn its successful bid into a championship that meets the expectations of athletes, fans and the global governing body.
Nairobi gets first African World Championships
The World Athletics Championships are the sport’s premier global event.
Nairobi’s selection means the competition will come to Africa for the first time in its history.
World Athletics said the decision reflects Kenya’s long connection with athletics and Nairobi’s experience in staging major international competitions.
The Kenyan capital previously hosted the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021.
It also hosts the Kip Keino Classic, which has become one of Africa’s leading one-day athletics meetings.
Kenya’s record on the track also strengthens the significance of the decision.
The country is the second-most successful nation in World Athletics Championships history. At the 2025 championships in Tokyo, Kenya won seven gold medals and 11 medals overall.
Kasarani Stadium at the centre of preparations
The main venue for the 2029 championships will be the Kasarani Stadium.
The facility is undergoing a major renovation ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
World Athletics said the stadium’s redevelopment formed part of Nairobi’s successful bid.
That creates both an opportunity and a deadline.
Kenya will host AFCON in 2027 before turning its attention fully to the athletics championships two years later.
The upgrades therefore need to deliver infrastructure capable of serving two major international sporting events.
The pressure will extend beyond the stadium.

Africa’s sporting profile gets a boost
The African Union said Nairobi’s selection demonstrates the continent’s growing capacity to host major international sporting events.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the championships could showcase Africa’s sporting heritage and talent while strengthening the continent’s global engagement.
The significance goes beyond Kenya.
Africa has hosted several major World Athletics events, including the World U18 Championships in Nairobi in 2017, the World U20 Championships in Nairobi in 2021 and the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone in 2026.
But the senior World Athletics Championships have never been held on the continent.
Nairobi will therefore move Africa into a new category of global athletics hosting.
Kenya now faces the delivery test
Winning the bid was only the first stage.
Kenya must now deliver on the commitments contained in its successful proposal.
World Athletics said Nairobi presented a bid backed by operational planning, financial guarantees and plans for a renovated stadium.
The next three years will show whether those plans translate into completed infrastructure and effective event preparation.
The challenge is particularly important because Kenya’s athletics reputation will place the event under intense global attention.
The country is not simply hosting a championship.
It is hosting the first edition on African soil.

The event could also create opportunities beyond the two weeks of competition.

Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie has already urged Kenya to work with other African countries as it prepares for the championships.
