Seven-vehicle pileup compounded by ongoing bridge repairs leaves commuters stranded overnight as impatience triggers total arterial standstill.

Thousands of commuters and motorists faced severe hardship on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following a multi-vehicle crash near Kara Bridge.

The collision caused traffic delays lasting over 14 hours along Nigeria’s busiest interstate corridor. Traffic quickly backed up beyond the Long Bridge toward Magboro.

The congestion extended backward into Lagos, dragging travel on Iyana-Oworo and the Third Mainland Bridge to a crawl.

Mechanical Failure Triggers Chain Reaction

The disruption began when an unregistered 40-foot container truck suffered a mechanical fault while in motion.

The driver lost control and crashed into six other vehicles along the corridor. The impact involved a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Toyota Sienna, a Toyota Highlander, and a Mitsubishi Hilux. Responders confirmed no casualties occurred in the crash.

The LRT Tiger Squad from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency arrived after receiving a distress call at 6:05 a.m.

LASEMA coordinated with LASTMA and the Nigeria Police Force to deploy towing trucks and clear the carriageway.

Illegal Lane Driving Causes Secondary Bottlenecks

Although emergency crews removed the vehicles, driver impatience turned the temporary delay into a prolonged blockade. Frustrated motorists began driving against traffic to escape the queue.

These wrong-way drivers occupied up to three lanes meant for Lagos-bound traffic. Their actions trapped oncoming vehicles and reduced inward movement to a single narrow lane.

When drivers tried forcing their way back into correct lanes near OPIC, secondary chokepoints formed.

Traffic officials noted these blockades persisted long after the original crash scene was completely cleared. A second collision along the same axis later that evening further prolonged recovery efforts into the night.

Existing Infrastructure Repairs Heighten Vulnerability

The crisis highlighted the fragility of the corridor during ongoing maintenance. Work on the Kara Bridge expansion joints had already restricted traffic to fewer operational lanes.

With reduced road capacity, any single vehicle breakdown or accident quickly escalates into a widespread system failure. Commercial transport operators responded by sharply raising fares along the route.

Stranded passengers faced inflated prices, leaving many with no choice but to walk long distances across the Long Bridge.

Personnel from LASTMA, the FRSC, and TRACE maintained a ground presence to restore order.

Authorities continue advising road users against one-way driving, noting it remains the primary cause of multi-hour gridlocks.
