The Rotary Club of Abuja City extended its humanitarian interventions to the environment through a tree-planting exercise, reinforcing the need to protect natural resources and promote sustainable community practices.

The exercise which highlighted the connection between caring for people today and protecting the environment they will inherit tomorrow hinged on the fact that trees help improve air quality, provide shade, support biodiversity and contribute to healthier surroundings. Their benefits, however, depend on proper maintenance and a collective willingness to protect them as they grow.

For the club, planting trees alongside educational intervention within the Jahi area of the Federal Capital Territory, offered a practical expression of its commitment to sustainable development, one that considers both human welfare and the environment.

According to club members who overwhelmingly participated in the initiative, environmental responsibility must become part of everyday community life.

They emphasised that planting a tree is an investment in the future which the inhabitants may not immediately enjoy all its benefits, but with proper care, can serve the community for many years.

The club President, Rosemary Omonigho noted that “In the same way, when we invest in children’s education, we are contributing to a future that will benefit families, communities and society at large.”

“We hope the people will understand that caring for their environment is just as important as pursuing other important matters as it requires responsibility, patience and a commitment to doing what is right, even when the benefits may not be immediate.”

According to the club’s project chairman, Rotarian Sunday Edoka, the exercise provided an opportunity to encourage young people especially to see themselves as active participants in building cleaner, greener communities.

“Through awareness and practical involvement, children can learn that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of governments or environmental organisations, it begins with individual choices and shared community action.”

Diverse interventions within Jahi by the Rotary Club of Abuja City reflects the humanitarian spirit of Rotary as an international body, which encourages people to come together to identify community needs and take practical steps towards addressing them.

The tree-planting exercise reminds the community that a better future requires attention to both human development and environmental care.

In Jahi, the Rotary Club of Abuja City has done more than provide assistance. It has helped establish a relationship built on care, opportunity and responsibility because sometimes a healthier lifestyle begins with planting a tree today for a community that will need its shade tomorrow.
