The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has denied allegations of a plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general election, challenging the allegation’s author, Timi Frank, to provide evidence.

In a statement dated October 20, 2026, and signed by its spokesperson, Dele Alake, the council urged security agencies to invite Frank, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to substantiate his claim.

The council said any credible threat against a political figure should be investigated promptly, regardless of party affiliation.

However, it denied any involvement by President Bola Tinubu, the Presidency or the APC campaign council in an alleged plan to target Atiku or any opposition figure.

APC Denies Withdrawal Of Atiku’s Security

The campaign council also dismissed claims that security personnel attached to Atiku had been withdrawn.

According to the statement, the former vice president remained protected by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The council further claimed that Tinubu had directed security agencies to strengthen protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.

It also maintained that Atiku’s security arrangements had been reinforced and were not compromised.

The claims about Atiku’s current security arrangements were made by the APC campaign council in its statement and were not independently established in the supplied report.

Council Defends Tinubu’s Democratic Credentials

Defending the president, the council described Tinubu as a democrat who recognises the importance of opposition parties in Nigeria’s political system.

It cited his role in the opposition movement that led to the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election.

The council accused Frank of making allegations that could heighten political tension, urging political actors to avoid unsubstantiated claims.

It also criticised what it described as the use of open letters and social media appeals by some opposition figures to attract international attention.

APC Calls For Restraint Ahead Of 2027 Elections

The campaign council urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint in their public statements as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum.

It called on political actors to focus on issues affecting Nigerians and ensure that electoral competition remains peaceful, lawful and centred on policies.

The controversy highlights the importance of investigating credible threats against political figures and establishing the facts behind allegations of politically motivated violence.

Frank’s allegation and the APC campaign council’s response remain distinct claims, and any determination of whether a threat exists would require evidence and an appropriate investigation.
