Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has warned President Bola Tinubu against actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Frank accused the Federal Government of allegedly using sponsored protests, intimidation and security agencies to frustrate opposition parties.
He raised the concerns following allegations surrounding the disruption of African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign activities in Sokoto State.
In a press statement issued on November 4, 2026, Frank said the alleged mobilisation of protesters and involvement of security operatives against opposition parties could threaten democratic participation.
His reaction followed allegations by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that the Sokoto State Government and the Department of State Services (DSS) were working to frustrate the ADC’s planned campaign rally.
Atiku, who addressed journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, alleged that the party had been denied access to public facilities and logistical support.
He also claimed that protesters were being mobilised to create disorder and provide grounds for imposing a curfew to stop the rally.
Frank Accuses Government Of Targeting Opposition Parties
Reacting to the allegations, Frank claimed that the mobilisation of protesters to disrupt opposition gatherings had become a recurring political strategy.
He also accused security agencies, particularly the DSS, of being involved in the alleged actions.
“At every opposition rally across the country, this has become their new protest strategy. They are also involving security agencies, particularly the DSS,” he said.
Frank urged Tinubu to protect democratic institutions and ensure that opposition parties could operate without intimidation.
“Tinubu must not truncate this democracy with his desperation. Despite their denial, the facts on ground have shown clearly that they have a sinister plot against the opposition, and Nigerians will legally resist such moves vehemently,” he declared.
He also cautioned the Sokoto State Government and other state administrations against actions that could prevent opposition parties from organising rallies and mobilising supporters.
According to him, every state government has a responsibility to provide equal opportunities for political parties to conduct lawful campaign activities.
Frank Calls On US, International Community To Monitor Nigeria
The former APC spokesman called on the United States Government and other members of the international community to monitor Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 elections.
He urged them to take appropriate diplomatic steps to discourage political violence and protect democratic participation.
Frank warned that public officials and security personnel involved in actions that violate the constitutional rights of opposition parties should be held accountable.
“All those involved, including the security agencies, will be held responsible,” he said.
He further urged Tinubu to ensure that federal institutions and security agencies remained politically neutral and did not intimidate political opponents.
DSS Reportedly Investigates Atiku’s Allegations
Frank’s statement also referred to reports that the DSS had ordered an investigation into Atiku’s allegation that its officials were involved in recruiting protesters to disrupt the ADC rally.
He insisted that opposition parties must retain their constitutional right to organise political activities without threats or obstruction.
Frank, who also serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, warned against actions that could escalate political tensions into violence.
However, he urged political actors to avoid retaliatory violence and resolve disagreements through lawful democratic channels.
He maintained that Nigeria’s democracy must provide a level playing field for all political parties, rather than allowing only the ruling party to campaign and mobilise supporters freely.
