We often think that reputation is built in big moments. The major announcements, successful launch, impressive presentation, or maybe the company’s last viral social media campaign.

But truthfully, reputation is usually built in much quieter places. It is built in how you respond when a customer is upset and there is no camera around, in whether you keep your word when breaking it would be easier, in how you treat the junior staff member who cannot offer you anything in return, in whether you acknowledge a mistake instead of forming, “It was not from our department.” It is built in the small decisions you take that nobody applauds, the email you chose to answer, the deadline you respected, the difficult conversations you did not avoid, the customer you decided to listen to, the colleague you gave credit to.

These moments rarely make it to public spaces, but they become part of what people say about you when you are not in the room. And that is the interesting thing about reputation, you can announce your values, but people experience them.

A brand does not become trusted because its values are beautifully framed on a wall. Trust grows when those values show up consistently in everyday behavior.

So as we begin another week, perhaps the question is not how do we look. It is, what are we saying, what are we doing when nobody is watching? Because sooner or later, someone will be watching.

They will remember how you made them feel.

What everyday decision do you think has the biggest impact on a company’s reputation, how it treats customers, how it treats its people, or how it handles its mistake?
