Google is offering eligible higher-education students a 12-month Google AI Plus trial at no cost, giving them access to expanded AI features and 400GB of cloud storage.

The current offer is aimed at students enrolled in higher education institutions in countries and regions where Google AI Plus is available. Students must verify their status through SheerID before they can claim the offer.

Unlike some earlier Google student promotions that focused on Google AI Pro, the current offer specifically provides the Google AI Plus plan with 400GB of storage for 12 months.

What students get with Google AI Plus

The Google AI Plus student offer is designed to give students additional access to Google’s artificial intelligence tools.

According to Google, AI features can help students with tasks such as:

  • Research and academic work
  • Writing and proofreading
  • Exam preparation
  • Creating reports
  • Generating images and videos
  • Organising files and projects
  • Using Gemini for study-related tasks

Google also says AI Plus provides expanded access to selected Gemini features.

In addition, the plan includes 400GB of cloud storage that can be used across Google’s storage ecosystem.

Google’s current AI Plus plan includes 400GB of storage across services such as Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.

Who can claim the free student offer?

Students must meet Google’s eligibility requirements before claiming the promotion.

Generally, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled at a higher education institution in an eligible country or region.
  2. Verify their student status through SheerID.
  3. Have a personal Google Account.
  4. Have a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method when required.

Google’s current student-offer page states that the 12-month AI Plus trial is available to students in countries where Google AI Plus is supported, with certain exclusions.

Importantly, students should check their individual eligibility before assuming they qualify because availability can vary by country and region.

Is the Google AI Plus student plan really free?

Yes. Google describes the student offer as a 12-month trial at no cost for eligible students.

However, students should pay attention to what happens after the promotional period.

Google says the student offer can automatically transition to a regular paid Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro membership when the offer ends, except where applicable laws require additional consent.

Therefore, students who do not want to continue with a paid subscription should review the cancellation terms before the free period expires.

How to apply for the Google student offer

Students can start the application through Google’s official student offer page.

Steps to claim the offer

Step 1: Visit the Google One student offer page.

Step 2: Select the available student offer.

Step 3: Complete student verification through SheerID when requested.

Step 4: Sign in with your personal Google Account.

Step 5: Complete the subscription process and provide a qualifying payment method if Google requests one.

Google’s official instructions direct students to one.google.com/ai-student to begin the process.

What about Nigerian students?

This is particularly relevant to students in Africa because Google AI Plus is currently available in Nigeria. Google’s Nigeria Google One page lists AI Plus with 400GB of storage.

However, availability of the student promotion itself depends on Google’s eligibility and verification system. Therefore, Nigerian students should use Google’s official student portal to check whether the offer appears for their account and institution.

Do not assume that having a Nigerian university email automatically guarantees access.

Google previously offered a different student promotion

The current AI Plus promotion should not be confused with Google’s earlier Google AI Pro student trial.

In 2025 and early 2026, Google offered eligible students access to Google AI Pro for 12 months in several markets. That promotion included benefits such as expanded Gemini access and 2TB of storage. Google has since moved to a different student-offer structure in some markets.

That distinction is important because some online posts still advertise the older Google AI Pro + 2TB student offer as though it were the current promotion.

Students should verify before paying anyone

The Google student offer is available through Google’s own platform.

Therefore, students should be cautious about websites or individuals asking for money to “activate” the free Google AI Plus student plan.

The safest approach is to verify eligibility directly through Google’s official student offer page and complete the student verification process there.
