Veteran entertainer Ayo Makun outlines the steep financial demands of securing major music acts to headline mega comedy concerts in Nigeria.

Veteran Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has revealed the high financial cost involved in securing top-tier Nigerian musical artistes to perform at major comedy shows.

Speaking during a recent industry interview, the stand-up veteran explained that hosting mega events like his annual AY Live requires multi-million naira budgets just to cover music performance fees and related logistics.

Escalating Fees and Production Demands

According to AY, booking top-charting Afrobeats artistes in Nigeria now requires tens of millions of naira per appearance.

He noted that the costs extend far beyond basic performance fees, as organizers must also cover technical riders, security, VIP accommodations, and large entourage travel arrangements.

“People come to the show to see a complete package, but they don’t realize what it takes to get these artistes on stage,” AY stated.

He explained that while music performances elevate concert production value, the rising costs put immense pressure on event promoters to balance ticket pricing with overall profitability.

Changing Dynamics in the Entertainment Industry

AY highlighted that the global rise of Afrobeats has shifted how music stars structure their fees for local events.

With many top acts regularly touring internationally and charging in foreign currency, securing their presence for local comedy shows has become increasingly competitive and capital-intensive.

The comedian emphasized that despite the financial burden, collaboration between comedy and music remains vital for delivering high-impact entertainment experiences that satisfy audience expectations.

Event organizers across Nigeria continue to navigate these mounting operational expenses as production overheads rise alongside ticket demand.
