Clearlake Capital acquires the ownership interests of Boehly and Mark Walter in a major restructuring of the club.
Todd Boehly has stepped down as chairman of Chelsea Football Club after Clearlake Capital acquired his ownership interest and that of fellow investor Mark Walter.
Chelsea confirmed the ownership transition on Thursday, September 17, 2026, stating that Clearlake will now assume full control of the Premier League club.
Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group, according to the club.
Boehly became Chelsea chairman in 2022 after the consortium acquired the club from former owner Roman Abramovich.
Boehly Responds to Departure
Reacting to the development, Boehly described his time as Chelsea chairman as an honour.
He thanked the Premier League, coaches, players, staff, leadership and supporters for their contributions during his tenure.
Boehly also expressed confidence in Chelsea’s future under Clearlake’s leadership.
“I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership,” he said.
Clearlake Assumes Full Control
Clearlake Capital has been Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022. The latest agreement transfers Boehly and Walter’s ownership interests to the investment firm.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano thanked Boehly for his contribution as chairman.
The firm said it would continue investing in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and long-term ambitions.
Chelsea also confirmed that the transition would not affect the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction.
Ownership Deal Reportedly Worth £950 Million
The Financial Times reported that the transaction is worth approximately £950 million, although Chelsea’s official announcement did not disclose the financial details.
The deal marks a major change to the ownership structure established after Chelsea’s 2022 takeover.
During the joint ownership period, the club invested in its senior and youth squads, training facilities, academy development, medical resources and sporting leadership.
Boehly’s departure ends his four-year tenure as chairman, while Clearlake begins a new phase of full control at Stamford Bridge.
