Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed how veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, transformed his perception of him from total disregard to genuine respect.
Obasanjo made the revelation while featuring as a guest on comedian Adebayo Ridwan’s (Isbae U) satirical podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, which aired on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Initial Distrust Shifted Upon Visiting Late Jurist’s Home
Addressing questions about his relationship with the controversial musician, Obasanjo admitted that he initially had no regard or respect for Charly Boy, whom he often viewed as eccentric and “jaga-jaga.”
The former president explained that his first impression was shaped by Charly Boy’s public persona, recallling a heavily decorated power bike parked outside the entertainer’s residence that initially put him off.
However, Obasanjo recalled that his opinion changed dramatically after visiting the late Supreme Court jurist, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, unaware that the elder statesman was living in Charly Boy’s house.
“When I went to visit Justice, it was in Charly Boy’s house. I didn’t know it was in Charly Boy’s house,” Obasanjo said. “I saw how Justice was being taken care of, and by whom? Charly Boy. So, I started changing my mind about Charly Boy.”

Obasanjo praised Charly Boy for giving his father a befitting burial following his passing and noted that the entertainer extended the same level of care to his mother when she moved in with him.
The former president disclosed that he once confronted Charly Boy over his unusual public appearances, to which the musician explained that his wild persona was purely a business strategy created to earn a living.
“He said all those jaga-jaga things that I see are to make chop-chop,” Obasanjo recalled, acknowledging that the entertainer is an intelligent man who successfully separates fiction from reality.
While admitting he wished Charly Boy had directly resembled his distinguished father, Obasanjo affirmed that seeing his devotion as a son earned him a lasting place of affection and respect.
