South Africa, Kenya Sign Six New Agreements to Boost Trade, Transport and Skills Development

South Africa and Kenya have signed six new cooperation agreements aimed at expanding trade, improving transport connectivity, and enhancing skills development, in a move expected to strengthen economic integration between two of Africa’s largest economies.

The agreements were signed in Pretoria on June 4, 2026, during the state visit of Kenyan President William Ruto, with both governments describing the deal as a major step toward removing barriers that continue to hinder trade and investment across the continent.

One of the key agreements focuses on standardisation, technical regulations, and conformity assessment, measures that are expected to simplify cross-border trade and reduce obstacles faced by businesses seeking access to new markets.

The two nations also signed a maritime cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening shipping links between East and Southern Africa. Officials believe the pact will improve logistics networks and support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to establish a single market for goods and services across Africa.

Additional agreements cover gender equality, technical and vocational education and training, arts and culture, and sports development.

The gender cooperation framework is designed to promote greater participation of women in leadership and economic activities, while the vocational education agreement seeks to equip workers with skills needed to meet changing labour market demands.

The sports partnership is expected to enhance collaboration in athlete development and sports administration as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the agreements provide a strong foundation for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, industrialisation, infrastructure development, and regional integration.

President Ruto described the accords as a reflection of a growing partnership between the two countries, noting that cooperation continues to expand in both scope and ambition.

The latest agreements bring the total number of bilateral accords between South Africa and Kenya to 34, further strengthening one of Africa’s most active diplomatic and economic relationships since formal ties were re-established in 1994.
