Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has been named the recipient of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, one of Spain’s most prestigious international honours.
The award was announced on Wednesday by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which cited Messi’s exceptional sporting achievements, sustained excellence, and global influence as key reasons for the recognition.
Born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, Messi began his football journey with Newell’s Old Boys before joining FC Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy at the age of 13.
Since making his senior debut in 2004, Messi has built one of the most successful careers in football history. During his time at Barcelona, he won 35 major trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles, 10 La Liga championships, and seven Copa del Rey crowns.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner later played for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami CF, where he currently plays.
On the international stage, Messi captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has also won two Copa América titles.
The foundation highlighted Messi’s resilience in overcoming a childhood growth disorder and praised his commitment to teamwork, humility, and excellence throughout his career.
Beyond football, the award organisers also recognised his humanitarian efforts through the Leo Messi Foundation and his work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
According to the foundation, the Sports Award honours individuals whose careers promote the values of sport and demonstrate its positive impact on society.
A total of 27 candidates from 12 countries were considered for this year’s award.
The 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony will take place in October in Oviedo, Spain, and will be attended by the Spanish royal family. Winners receive a sculpture designed by Joan Miró, an official diploma, an insignia, and a cash prize of €50,000.
